A common statement I hear when it comes to fishing is “I like to catch, I do not like to fish”.

Me, I love fishing. Although I prefer to catch something to put in my freezer (since I do eat an excessive amount of fish), fishing is a time to enjoy being out in nature or just out of the house.

Fall 2005, the last time I took my boat out for the season, we sat out around the bend from the Homer Spit for 8 hours and caught 2 undesirable cod. But the water was calm, the salmon were dancing often (we were fishing for halibut), porpoises came by the boat a few times, and we had a pod of whales hang out with us for an hour some times right next to the boat. To top it off it was a perfect sunset and the otters kicked back with their brooskies along side the boat and watched the sunset with us….. How can someone not love fishing?

There’s nothing like that excitement of catching a fish and being ready to catch the next one, but even standing in a riverbed with your pole you will still have some kind of adventure with or without the fish if you allow yourself.
